Tommy John

Tommy John spent 26 years in the major leagues as a pitcher for the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, Chicago White Sox, The Oakland Athletics, and the Cleveland Indians. He posted a career record of 288-231 with a 3.34 ERA. The left-hander pitched 4,708 1/3 innings, 2245 strikeouts, 46 shutouts, 700 games started. All of these statistics are in the top 25 of all-time baseball records. He had three 20 win seasons, appeared in four all-star games and played in four world series.

In addition to being one of baseball's all-time greats, Tommy is perhaps best-known for defying nature when he returned to baseball following reconstructive elbow surgery in the 1974 season. The surgery performed by Dr. Frank Jobe, is now known in sports medicine throughout the world as "The Tommy John Surgery." Tommy posted a 10-10 record in 1976, his first year back from the surgery, and earned the Sporting News "Comeback Player Of The Year", as well as receiving the prestigious Fred Hutchinson Award for overcoming physical adversity.

Tommy is in his second year with the Charlotte Knights, AAA affiliate for the Chicago White Sox, as the director of community relations and as the radio color analyst. He was the television analyst for the world champion New York Yankees on WPIX Channel 11 for the 1998 season. Tommy has been a television analyst for the past 8 years with the Atlanta Braves, The Minnesota Twins, college baseball for the Miami Hurricanes, and Florida International University. Tommy does motivational talks throughout the country for various national corporations.

As community relations director, Tommy is able to share his passion for the game of baseball with the Charlotte business community. He is an active speaker at rotary clubs, schools, camps, churches, and area businesses. Tommy is able to share his views on commitment, dedication, success, leadership, and achievement with the Charlotte community.

Tommy has been involved with many charities throughout his career in baseball. Some of these charities include cancer research for LA Children's Hospital, Boys and Girls Clubs, American Heart Association, March of Dimes, C.H.O.C Festival Of Trees, Operation Comeback (A Drug Rehabilitation Program) and the Presbyterian Hospital's Festival Of Trees.

Tommy is a native of Terre Haute, Indiana. He and his wife of 28 years, Sally, reside in Charlotte, NC. They are the partents of 4 children, Tamara, Tommy III, Travis, and Taylor.
